George Enescu Memorial House, Sinaia

George Enescu Memorial House, Sinaia

The George Enescu Memorial House, also known as Glade Villa, stands as a testament to the life and work of the renowned composer George Enescu. Constructed between 1923 and 1926 in Sinaia, this villa served as a haven of inspiration and tranquility for Enescu. Collaborating with architect Radu Dudescu, Enescu meticulously designed the villa to reflect his taste for simplicity and refinement.

The interior of George Enescu Memorial House boasted spacious and comfortable rooms adorned with furniture from various styles, including Romanian, Oriental, and Biedermeier. Enescu's own room epitomized his philosophy of life, with its modest and intimate Romanian-style décor. His wife Maria Cantacuzino Enescu's room displayed an eclectic mix of furnishings.

It was within the walls of this villa that Enescu composed some of his most iconic works, including the Romanian Rhapsodies, the Piano Quartet, and sections of the opera Oedipus. The salon of the villa still houses Enescu's cherished piano, an "Ibach" crafted in Lausanne, France.

Following Enescu's departure from Romania after World War II, the Villa underwent a transformation. In 1947, Enescu signed a deed of donation, bequeathing the villa to serve as a retreat for Romanian and foreign artists. Subsequently restored in 1990, the villa was reborn as the George Enescu Memorial House, preserving the legacy of one of Romania's most esteemed composers for generations to come.
