Monument a l'Infanterie Belge (Belgian Infantry Memorial), Brussels
Dedicated to the Belgian foot soldiers who fought in both the First and Second World Wars, this memorial stands in front of the Palace of Justice, across from Place Poelart, the city's largest square, and right near the Anglo-Belgian War Memorial. During World War I, infantry troops suffered the highest casualties, accounting for nearly 70% of the total losses from 1914 to 1918.
Consisting of a symbolic column and several soldiers at its base, the memorial was inaugurated in 1935 in the presence of King Leopold III and is positioned on an elevated platform overlooking the center of Brussels. Its has a slender shape, resembling "the blade of a dagger" rising toward the sky, with the "handle" planted in the ground and the guard fixed at ground level. This design imparts an airy feeling, emphasizing the intended effect of glorifying the scene. The inscription on the monument, translated into English, reads: "To the infantrymen who died for their country".
