International Manga Museum, Kyoto

International Manga Museum, Kyoto

For die-hard manga enthusiasts, this spot is an absolute gem. Imagine a colossal manga library housed in a former school building – that's exactly what you'll find here. Since its inauguration in 2006, the museum has amassed an astounding collection of 300,000 manga volumes spanning from the 19th century to contemporary works, all available for perusal with the price of admission.

You'll also discover engaging exhibitions, mostly bilingual, delving into the rich history and artistic techniques behind manga creation. Adding to the excitement are occasional performances by 'kamishibai' storytellers, who bring tales to life using scrolls of images – a tradition dating back to the days when monks used such scrolls to impart Buddhist teachings to illiterate peasants.

And if that's not enticing enough, there's a cozy café adorned with doodles by visiting celebrities – the perfect spot to enjoy your sandwiches while surrounded by manga magic.

Tip:
Those willing to embark on some manga-inspired tourism should check out "Uchouten Kazoku" (Eccentric Family), set around Shimogamo Shrine, or "Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha", based on Fushimi Inari. Both shrines serve as gateways to whimsical dimensions depicted in these beloved manga series.
