Koryu-ji Temple, Kyoto

Reputedly Kyoto's eldest temple, Koryu-ji traces its origins back to the early 7th century and serves as a treasure trove of cultural relics spanning from the Asuka period to the Kamakura period. According to legend, Hata no Kawakatsu, credited as the pioneer of Japanese kagura dance, founded this venerable institution.

The Kodo Hall, where Buddhist scriptures are recited by priests, dates back to the 12th century, while other structures underwent reconstruction in the 17th century. Notably, the Kodo Hall holds is recognized as an Important Cultural Property by the national government. Nestled within it is a seated statue of Amida-Nyorai Buddha, overseeing the Buddhist paradise, revered as a National Treasure. Additionally, numerous statues housed within the hall carry the designation of Important Cultural Properties.

Adjacent to the Kodo Hall lies the Reihoden, housing a plethora of ancient Buddhist sculptures, paintings, manuscripts, and historical records, all bestowed with the titles of National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. Notably, the statue of Miroku-Bosatsu, revered as the Buddha of the future, holds the distinction of being Japan's first National Treasure, bestowed with this honor in 1951.

In keeping with the tradition of Kyoto's temples, Koryu-ji is enveloped by enchanting gardens, adding to its allure and serenity.
