Landmark Tower and Sky Garden Observatory, Yokohama

Landmark Tower and Sky Garden Observatory, Yokohama (must see)

The Yokohama Landmark Tower is a prominent feature of the Yokohama skyline, noted for being the fourth-tallest building and the fifth-tallest structure in Japan. Standing 296.3 meters (or 972 feet) tall, it dominates the Minato Mirai 21 district and is conveniently located near the Yokohama Museum of Art. Until 2014, it held the title of Japan's tallest building before being surpassed by Abeno Harukas, underscoring its iconic status.

This skyscraper serves multiple functions, housing a luxurious five-star hotel on floors 49 through 70, with 603 rooms for discerning guests. The lower floors contain a variety of shops, restaurants, clinics, and offices, providing a diverse range of amenities for visitors and tenants alike. The building's stability is enhanced by two tuned mass dampers located on the 71st floor, which help mitigate seismic activity and wind-induced sway.

One of the first highlights is the high-speed express elevator. To begin the ascent, proceed from the lower lobby terminal to the boarding area. Inside the sleek cabin, advanced aerodynamic technology allows one of the world's fastest elevators to whisk visitors to the 69th floor in just 40 seconds.

The floor number is no coincidence, as the tower's principal attraction is the Sky Garden Observatory on the 69th floor, which offers stunning 360-degree panoramic views of Yokohama and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. Simply step out of the elevator and you will be greeted by sweeping, uninterrupted windows encircling the observation deck. Viewing the city from this height provides spectacular vistas at any time of day. The observatory is photographer-friendly, permitting the use of lens hoods and tripods. However, the windows facing Mount Fuji are not ideally positioned, making sunset a particularly popular time for catching a glimpse of the iconic peak. These viewing windows are located in the southwestern section of the observation deck.

The design and construction of Yokohama Landmark Tower were a collaboration between Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and KlingStubbins, combining innovative engineering with elegant architectural design.
