Nishi Hongan-ji, Kyoto

Nishi Hongan-ji, Kyoto

Meet Nishi Hongan-ji, the brother of Higashi Hongan-ji, but don't let the sibling rivalry fool you—this temple holds the crown for seniority, having been established first in 1591, and boasts a larger network of branch temples. Plus, it's got that coveted World Heritage status, all thanks to the cultural treasures it inherited after the dismantling of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's palace.

Now, let's talk dimensions—prepare to have your mind blown. The Amida Hall alone flaunts 132 pillars and can accommodate 1,500 souls. Inside, you'll find a statue of sect founder Shinran chilling alongside paintings of Pure Land prophets, some dating back to ancient times, featuring a colorful cast of characters from both China and India. And just when you think it can't get any grander, enter the Memorial Hall (Goeido), a mammoth structure supported by a jaw-dropping 227 pillars, big enough to host over 2,000 folks. Oh, and did we mention it houses a statue of Shinran coated with lacquer mixed with his cremated ashes? Talk about going out in style!

Nishi Hongan-ji also houses Japan's largest outdoor Noh stage, as well as fine artwork in the reception rooms, originally commissioned by the warlord Hideyoshi to flex his power. And for a dash of exotic flair, check out the ornate Chinese-style Karamon Gate on the southern side, adorned with auspicious motifs and figures straight out of moral tales—a colorful relic from the flamboyant Momoyama Age.

There's a guided tour every afternoon (in Japanese, of course), culminating in the temple's pièce de résistance: a serene pond garden enclosing a pleasure pavilion adorned with paintings of the 36 Immortal Poets. It's not just a garden—it's a venue for moon-viewing parties and tea ceremonies fit for royalty. Originally plucked from Hideyoshi's palace, this pavilion rubs shoulders with the likes of the Silver and Golden Pavilions, completing the trio of Kyoto's ancient architectural wonders.
