Pha That Luang (Great Sacred Stupa), Vientiane

Pha That Luang (Great Sacred Stupa), Vientiane (must see)

The Great Sacred Stupa stands as an iconic symbol of Buddhist spirituality and Lao nationalism in the heart of Vientiane. Believed to have been initially established in the 3rd century, this majestic stupa has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries, with the most recent restoration efforts taking place in the 1930s in response to foreign invasions in the region. Today, Great Sacred Stupa is widely recognized as the most important national monument in Laos, holding profound cultural and historical significance for its people.

The architectural grandeur of Great Sacred Stupa is a testament to Lao culture and identity, making it a revered symbol of national pride. The stupa comprises three distinct levels, each intricately designed to convey aspects of Buddhist doctrine. The vast dimensions of Great Sacred Stupa are awe-inspiring, with the first level spanning 223 feet by 226 feet, the second level measuring 157 feet along each side, and the third level standing at 98 feet along each side. Rising majestically to a height of 147.6 feet from ground to pinnacle, Great Sacred Stupa commands attention and reverence from all who behold it.

Surrounded by encircling walls, the area around Great Sacred Stupa has been gated to preserve its sanctity and protect it from vehicular traffic. This architectural marvel is adorned with intricate sculptures representing both Lao and Khmer artistic influences, including a notable depiction of Jayavarman VII. As a sacred site of pilgrimage and contemplation, Great Sacred Stupa continues to draw visitors from near and far, offering a profound glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry and spiritual heritage of Laos.

Why You Should Visit:
Arguably one of the finest Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia.
Lots of photo opportunities and worth setting aside an hour or so.

Tip:
If you want to save money, you can view most of the temple from the outside and check out the giant golden reclining Buddha in the neighboring Wat, as the grounds containing it are more interesting than the Stupa itself. Furthermore, you can see the big golden Stupa from the reclining Buddha's grounds.
If you do go inside, note that a strict dress code is enforced so do cover your shoulders and knees and don't expose your midriff. Skirts are available for rent, probably for a small fee. There are also lots of street food stalls outside with decent eats.
