Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury), Vienna

The Schatzkammer, situated within the Hofburg complex, is renowned as the world's most extensive treasury collection. It has occupied its current location since 1983, with its entrance found in the Swiss Courtyard. On most days, visitors can explore its fascinating exhibits for approximately an hour and a half.

Within the Schatzkammer, as well as other parts of the complex, visitors can embark on a historical journey through the treasures of the Habsburg Empire, spanning more than a millennium. The items on display have endured a rich and eventful history, witnessing events such as Napoleon's conquests, the decline of the Roman Empire, the era of the Nazis, and the wars against Prussia. Consequently, these exhibits have been shuttled between Vienna and Nuremberg over the years.

Among the exquisite artifacts housed here is a sword believed to have once belonged to Charlemagne (also known as Charles the Great or Charles I, King of the Franks), the crown of the former Holy Roman Empire, and even the legendary Agate Bowl. For centuries, the Agate Bowl has been linked to the tales of King Arthur's court and the enduring legend of the Holy Grail.
