Franklin Square to Washington Square

Franklin Square to Washington Square, Savannah, Georgia (B)

This section will cover the homes and other important buildings on and around Franklin, Ellis, Johnson, Reynolds, Warren and Washington Squares. Beginning at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the western side of the Historic District you can follow either W. Bryan Street or W.Congress Street to the series of squares indicated on the map above. Just past Franklin Square you will come to City Market where you can get everything from a great meal, to a souvenir, to a carriage ride. You can also spend a couple of hours strolling through art galleries and artist’s studios.

From City Market you will come to Ellis Square. A few years ago the square was a very ugly parking garage. Now the garage is underground and there is a park with a great fountain where kids will be playing in hot weather. Go ahead, get your feet wet. The next square is in fact the first square, Johnson Square. This was the first square built in Savannah as part of General Oglethorpe’s layout of the settlement. Then it’s on to Reynolds Square, the Olde Pink House and the Oliver Sturgis House. Continue through Warren and Washington Squares and you find yourself at Broad Street on the eastern edge of the Historic District. Find 20 Broad Street, the Pirates’House. Stop in. You’ll enjoy yourself, and you’ll learn spooky history. ...... (follow the instructions below for accessing the rest of this article).
