Exploring Latvia thoroughly means experiencing each of its regions, including visiting the Latgale region in the east. Do any research on travel in Latgale and you’re bound to see Rezekne pop up. After all, this city is often dubbed the “Heart of Latgale” which isn’t the kind of title you just throw around. Naturally, this put the city of Rezekne on my itinerary when I returned to Latvia. That’s even though I didn’t know what was in store for me.

Easily the main attraction of Rezekne is the ruins of the city’s old castle. The ruins of Rezekne Castle are a symbol of the city and it’s not hard to see why. In 1285 the Livonian Order built this stone castle to replace a wooden fortress. Today it’s a little like the castle ruins in Ludza, where only a few walls are left. Not bad given that it’s been left abandoned since 1712, after suffering major damage by Swedish forces during the Second Northern War. ......
