The art scene in San Jose has always been fascinating, and there are some remarkable art galleries that are a testimony to Costa Rica’s art legacy. Centers of art such as the Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura constitute some of the most prominent artistic landmarks in San Jose. This walking tour will familiarise you with Costa Rican Art in San Jose.

Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura
1) Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura
This National Center for Arts and Cultural is one of the most impressive venues in town. It takes up a whole city block, and is crammed full of wonderful things to see. It is located in the building that used to house the National Liquor Factory of San Jose, Costa Rica. Now, as well as housing several performing arts centers and the contemporary art museum, it also acts as the offices for the Cultural Ministry of the country.

This museum houses some of the finest contemporary art from the best of Central American artists, especially those from Costa Rica. Yet, some of the permanent collection includes the works of Jose Cuevas and Oswaldo Guayasamin from Equador, so you will not just find the art of the country here.

The Centro Nacional de Arte y Cultura is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Admission is just $1 for adults and 80 cents for students. Seniors and children under the age of 11 can get in for free. It will be a hard deal to beat, as you will be able to spend hours here learning about the art and culture of this exotic Central American country.

Galeria Andromeda is a small but trendy art gallery in San Jose that displays contemporary local artworks. Here, paintings and prints from national artists are available for purchase at affordable costs. If you are looking for an interesting place to visit and see some local artwork, as well as to purchase some unique items for your home, this gallery is worth a visit.

The Galeria Ocelote (The Ocelote Art Gallery) plays a key role in the cultural life of San Jose. It strongly promotes the graphic arts and original Latin American handicrafts. Here they exhibit works by prestigious artists from Costa Rica as well as textile designs printed by the Ocelote Workshop.

The Galeria de Arte Amir (The Amir Art Gallery) is a famous art gallery among tourists, located in the center of the city. It was first opened to the public in 1988, and since then has been the main spot for buying the best quality in paintings, sculptures and frames. Art exhibitions take place regularly.

The Arte Latino is a contemporary art gallery in San Jose, where you can admire paintings by Costa Rican and Nicaraguan artists. All the works exhibited here are original artworks, and it might be one of the only places where you can purchase authentic Central American artworks at affordable rates.

Galeria Joaquín García Monge is a modern art gallery that belongs to the National Theater. On display here are many contemporary art works, notably graphic art. Exhibitions by national and international artists take place regularly.

The Galleria Jacobo Carpio is a Downtown art gallery in San Jose, known for its adventurous modern art exhibitions. On display here are works by Mexican, Argentinian, and Cuban artists as well as by local ones. A much respected art gallery known for the variety of its art.
