St John the Baptist Anglican Cathedral
1) St John the Baptist Anglican Cathedral
This Anglican cathedral was built in 1831 by the British community of Buenos Aires. It was one of the first churches to be built here in the neoclassical style, and is closely linked with the early life of Argentina. Located near many historical landmarks, the church itself was was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 2000. The centrally-located church is also a beautiful building supported by columns, with amazing stained glass windows that never fail to impress.

Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced
2) Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced
The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Our Lady Of Mercy) is a temple dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Spain's patron saint. It was brought to Argentina by the Spanish colonizers. The church, which dates from 1779, was declared a basilica in 1917 by Pope Benedict XV. Built with elements of baroque and rococo styles, the church is one of the most beautiful of its kind. It is particularly famous for its altar and fresco depictions.

Metropolitan Cathedral
3) Metropolitan Cathedral
The Metropolitan or City Cathedral is the home of the Catholic Church in Buenos Aires. The construction of the cathedral has a long history, having been built over many years. Its chapel, built in the 18th Century, has carvings that tell the biblical story of Jacob and his son. Other parts of the cathedral combine diverse architectural styles, and here you can find numerous sculptures and carvings. It also houses the ashes of the famous General José de San Martín.

San Ignacio De Loyola Church
4) San Ignacio De Loyola Church
San Ignacio De Loyola Church is the oldest colonial church in the city. It opened in 1734 after taking some 24 years to build. The church has many fantastic paintings from the 18th century, including a canvas of San Ignacio de Loyola himself made in 1767. Visitors to the church can also enjoy walking through numerous subterranean tunnels.

The Basílica Menor de San Francisco
5) The Basílica Menor de San Francisco
The Basílica Menor de San Francisco belongs to the Franciscan Order and to the the parish of San Roque. There has been a church on the same site since one was first built built by a Jesuit architect in 1730. It is famous for its baroque style façade and for numerous statues of saints and other people of historic importance. Look out for the statues of Saint Francis of Assisi, the poet Dante and explorer Christopher Columbus.

Basílica de Santo Domingo
6) Basílica de Santo Domingo
The Basílica de Santo Domingo - also known as the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Rosario - is a Dominican church that was built in the 18th Century. It is located at the corner of Belgrano and Venezuela streets in the San Telmo neighborhood. The church was completed in 1783, and since its construction has housed the Natural History Museum and an astronomic observatory. The Basilica is open Monday to Sunday from 9am-12.30pm.

Russian Orthodox Church
7) Russian Orthodox Church
The Russian Orthodox Church is a Moscow-style church that was built for the growing community of Russians in Buenos Aires and elsewhere around Argentina. Constructed less than 100 years ago, it's located in the Lezama park in the San Telmo neighborhood of the city. It is decorated with Venetian mosaics, beautiful windows and blue domes. Several sacred artifacts are also preserved here.
