The city of Christchurch, with its great cultural heritage, is home to a multitude of museums, galleries, art centers, and theaters. Don't leave the city without taking the chance to visit some of the great arts and culture venues on our self-guided tour.
1) Canterbury Museum
This must see museum displays all the natural, cultural and historic heritage of the city and the region. There is a large collection of stuffed birds on the first floor where you can see the Kiwi and the extinct Moa. There's also a Maori department that preserves the artifacts of these ancient people. The Antarctica department will give you a fascinating glimpse of this remote part of the world. Among many other collections you can see a great set of 19th Century fashion.

2) Court Theatre
Founded in 1971, the Court Theatre company has been based here at the Christchurch Arts Center since 1976. The court operates two top auditoria with both local and international cast members. Court One seats 291 in a broad 'semi-thrust' stage, and features more than 250 performances of about eight different productions each year. Works performed include New Zealand plays, modern international pieces and time-honored classics. Court Two, known as The Forge, seats 123 in a 'box' format.

3) Dux de Lux
Dux de Lux is a family restaurant located in the center of the city, next to the historic buildings of the Art Center. Open since 1978, it is a long standing favorite among Christchurch families. Dux de Lux is a fine restaurant with the freshest food and great atmosphere. Its light cuisine of fresh sea food and vegetarian meals is very suitable for even the youngest visitors.

4) Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu
This large art complex boasts nine exhibition halls. Opened in 2003, it's situated in a modern building in the heart of Christchurch. It houses the largest public art collection on New Zealand's south island and is one of the most significant collections in the whole country. Paintings, drawings, print, photographs, glass, and metal works by New Zealand's most distinguished artists are all on display here.

5) Christchurch Town Hall
Established in 1972 as the Christchurch Town Hall of the Performing Arts, the Christchurch Town Hall - as it's now known - is the city's premier performing arts center. Located centrally on the banks of the Avon river, overlooking Victoria Square, this top venue hosts a whole range of performances including orchestral concerts and recitals, opera, ballet and dramatic productions, musical comedy, variety, folk, rock, and jazz concerts. Here you'll also find conventions and conferences, civic functions, and local cultural and commercial events. Its 2,500 seat auditorium is widely known for its good acoustics.

6) Repertory Theatre
The Repertory Theatre is one of the city's oldest theatres, having given its first performance in 1928. It is located in a charming old building which remained virtually the same as when it was built. This voluntary organization aims to promote art and entertainment in the city. With seating for more than 400 patrons, it hosts several productions each year featuring local talented actors playing in classical and modern dramas, comedies, bright shows, and other performances.

7) Isaac Theatre Royal
Near the city center you'll find an Edwardian style building that is The Theatre Royal. Originally built in 1863, a new building was erected nearby in 1907 which remains home to the theatre to this day. This charitable foundation has delighted spectators with the finest classical performances for a century.
