Tour Stops and Attractions
Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament‎
1) Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament‎
Among all religious buildings of Christchurch, this one is probably the most impressive. In fact, this cathedral is regarded as the most outstanding examples of church architecture in New Zealand. A masterpiece by prominent architect Francis Perte, it was designed in a renaissance style. After four years of construction, this Catholic Cathedral opened in 1905. The main entryway is embellished with columns and a facade in Sebastian Serlio's style. Inside you'll be amazed by the beautiful altar.

St. Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church
2) St. Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church
Not far from the main town cathedral you'll find a small but significant church. St. Michael Church was the first parish in Christchurch. The building is in a late Victorian Gothic style with medieval details. Built out of wood in 1872, it is regarded as one of the biggest timber churches in the world.

Christchurch Cathedral
3) Christchurch Cathedral
Christchurch was raised around this imposing edifice. Located in Cathedral Square, this strikingly grandiose Anglican cathedral is now inseparable from the city it serves. Construction began in 1864, but had to be halted due to financial problems before resuming in 1873. It is home to a number of splendid features: the cathedral's stained glass windows, wall panels, font, altar, and bells are all rich in heritage value.

St. Luke the Evangelist Anglican Church
4) St. Luke the Evangelist Anglican Church
This is the head church of the Anglican communion in Christchurch. Its present building, in Gothic revival style, was constructed in 1908 after the original building was ruined. The interior of this church is truly impressive, with a splendid timbered concave, a statue of Our Lady, and a magnificent painting depicting her Ascension into Heaven. The Font, Lectern and Altar are also of great heritage value.

Oxford Terrace Baptist Church
5) Oxford Terrace Baptist Church
This elegant and modest Baptist church is located close to the very center of the city. Its construction was held up several times, but finally one local architect won the tender and the work began in 1881, it opened a year after. Its design reflects the composed restraint which could be said characterizes the faith itself.

St. Mary Catholic Church
6) St. Mary Catholic Church
This church and school complex is one of several Catholic centers in Christchurch. It's one of the city's most accessible Catholic communities too, because of its very close proximity to the city center.

The City Church
7) The City Church
The City Church is an apostolic church that is representative of the style of modern churches in Christchurch. Its building, services, and values all speak in a modern and original way.
Knox Presbyterian Church
8) Knox Presbyterian Church
The Knox Church of Christchurch is the home of the Presbyterian faith in the city. The church building, made of brick in a Gothic revival style, stands out for its beauty and elegance. Founded in 1902, its principal features are a pipe organ, wooden archways, and beautiful stained-glass windows that depict two rivers rising from mountains.
