Johannesburg is the largest and most economically developed city in South Africa. It is a rich city founded on large deposits of gold and precious minerals. Gandhi Square
1) Gandhi Square
Gandhi Square was previously known as Governmental Square. Recently renovated, this square has a nice view, with several beautiful shops, restaurants and cafés. A statue of Gandhi, for whom the square is named, stands in its center.
Carlton Center
2) Carlton Center
Carlton Center represents the new era of economic development in Johannesburg. It is the tallest building, located in the business district. A popular tourist attraction, visitors can easily reach the nearby hotel of the same name and visit the shopping center located on the first floor.

Absa Money Museum
3) Absa Money Museum
Absa Money Museum is dedicated to the history of South Africa’s economic development and the scientific study of currency. It contains the country’s largest collection of money, including glass beads, shells and a range of coins with information on their relation to the history of trade and the growth of society.
Ansteys Tower
4) Ansteys Tower
Ansteys Tower, dating back to 1937, is now considered an historical monument. This impressive Art Deco structure was Africa’s tallest building for a long time and also home to famed playwright and theater director Cecil Williams.

5) Johannesburg Art Gallery
Johannesburg Art Gallery is located in Joubert Park. It contains exhibitions of well-known artists such as Picasso, Rodin, H. Moore and Batisse. Usually the gallery is quite crowded due to the amount of important works it houses.
Joubert Park
6) Joubert Park
Joubert Park is one of Johannesburg’s first parks, located in the center of the city. It is a beautiful park with great views and a wonderful place to relax.
Johannesburg Stadium
7) Johannesburg Stadium
Johannesburg Stadium is one of Johannesburg’s greatest sports complexes. It holds a capacity of 37,500 and will be a venue for the 2010 World Cup. Many festivals, cultural and art events are held here as well.

Ponte City
8) Ponte City
Ponte City is a cylindrical construction, built in 1975, and is Africa’s tallest residential skyscraper. In the 90s, the impressive 54-story tower became the site of crime and gang activity which caused the building to deteriorate in condition. Over the years, efforts have been made to revitalize the structure, with future plans to continue the restoration.

Telkom Joburg Tower
9) Telkom Joburg Tower
Telkom Joburg Tower was constructed for Johannesburg’s largest telecommunications company. Due to its height, this structure stands out amongst other structures in the central business district.

Constitution Hill
10) Constitution Hill
Constitution Hill was originally built as a fort according to the design of German soldier Colonel A.H. Schiel in order to maintain peace in the early mining days of the city and was eventually used as a penal institution. This national monument later served as South Africa’s Constitutional Court and is now a popular landmark in Johannesburg.

11) South African National Museum of Military History
South African National Museum of Military History contains arms, artillery, aircrafts, uniforms and other items representing the history of South African warfare. There are also books and videos available documenting the exhibits found in the museum.
Origins Center
12) Origins Center
Origins Center, located in the center of the city, is comprised of two museums that relate Africa’s history from humankind’s origin to the development of art, symbolism and technology. A host of fascinating multimedia displays are available as well as audio guides in six different languages.
The Nelson Mandela Bridge
13) The Nelson Mandela Bridge
The Nelson Mandela Bridge is a new and very beautiful structure in Johannesburg. It took two years to build and became an instant famous city landmark, linking two major parts of town.

Brixton Cemetery
14) Brixton Cemetery
Brixton Cemetery is a place of rest for those who gave their lives in the First World War. There is a monument to these brave soldiers as well as one commemorating the South African Scottish Regiment.
Sentech Tower
15) Sentech Tower
Sentech Tower is one of Johannesburg’s most famous landmarks and easily identifiable in the city landscape. This very tall structure provided the city’s first wireless services and it is also used as a television tower.
