Treat yourself and the family to a fun day of activities and exploration at Lincoln Park. This is the largest public park in Chicago, encompassing 1,208 acres (489 hectares). It is also the second most visited park in the United States, and within its expansive grounds are a zoo, history museum, nature museum, bike and jogging trails. Get up close to some intriguing wildlife at Lincoln Park Zoo, set among lagoons and mature trees. This is the oldest free public zoo in the country, hence its slogan, "Lincoln Park Zoo is everyone's zoo". Among the animals you can see are lions, black bears, monkeys, gazelle, lizards and crocodiles. After observing the fauna, check out some flora at the Lincoln Park Conservatory. There are floral displays all through the year with plants from many different countries and climates of the world. During the summer, enjoy the conservatory’s outdoor French garden, filled with many fragrant flowers and a fountain. While you are in the Lincoln Park, relax by the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, a hidden garden that is on the National Register of Historic Places. See the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion, an organically sculpted barrel-vaulted space that is used for various functions and events. The latticework of the dome is patterned after a turtle shell and is an impressive sight, as are the downtown views from this spot. Other park highlights are the Chicago History Museum and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
