Whether you are shopping for the perfect gift or hunting for the latest fashions, you will surely find it with a trip to the Mitte district. It is home to Friedrichstraße, one of Berlin's most famous shopping strips and considered by many to be the city's number one shopping location. See for yourself what all the fuss is about when you tour this long road, which crosses the Spree River and is close to some of the German capital's most famous sights. On this bustling street, you will find department stores and high-end boutiques. There are plenty of coffee bars, cafés and restaurants if you need to rest and top up your flagging energy levels. One of the great things about Friedrichstraße is that it isn’t just the shops to get excited about. There is also theater and opera to enjoy as well as the many creative buildings with beautiful architecture. The area was redeveloped in the 1990s and a number of highly respected architects were involved. If it's cool fashions that you're after, then also try Mulackstraße und Alte Schönhauser for the flagship stores of international designers and independent boutiques showcasing the work of the hottest labels of the day. There's more exclusive shopping in Berlin-Mitte, in the area Alte Schönhauser Straße and Mulackstraße. For antiques, see what treasures await you at the small antiques market located in the S-Bahn-Bögen of the Georgenstrasse.
