Baroque Museum
2) Baroque Museum
The southern wing of the Orangerie in the Mirabell Palace houses the Baroque Museum of Salzburg. It has a collection of initial sketches by 17th and 18th century European masters. The display is supplemented by explanations of the technical terms and stages of the works of art.
The Baroque Museum was established in 1973 and consists of the collection by Dr. Kurt Rossacher and his wife Else. They donated their small but significant collection to the city and province of Salzburg on condition that it would be displayed to the public.
The collection at the Baroque Museum includes 139 oil paintings, 42 wood and clay models and the impressive collection of sketches by famous artists. The collection of sketches is called the ‘Birth of the Artwork Collection’ and has the initial sketches by well known masters like Rubens, Bernini, Carlone, Algardi and Maffi. Visitors and art lovers will enjoy comparing the initial sketches with the completed work of some of the best known paintings in the world. Sketches by well known Salzburg artists like Rottmayer also form part of the collection. The museum is a unique repository dedicated to the basic ideas of artists that later became some of their finest works.

Rupertinum Museum of Modern Art
4) Rupertinum Museum of Modern Art
The Rupertinum Museum of Modern Art is one of the two galleries dedicated to modern art in Salzburg. It is housed in a historic 17th century building in the city.
The Rupertinum is located in the historic city center of Salzburg. A college for young priests was built over an earlier structure that existed from 1350 in 1633. It served as a seminary for the ruling Archdiocese. After the Archdiocesan rule of the city, it became a student dormitory until 1974. In 1983, the Rupertinum was converted to house one of the museums of modern art. It has a beautiful arcaded courtyard where visitors can rest and contemplate after viewing the art work.
The Rupertinum Museum of Modern Art was founded by Friedrich Welz and his friend Oskar Kokoschka. It holds temporary exhibitions of modern art and is also a repository of graphic art and twentieth century contemporary art. There is always a changing themed contemporary art exhibition at the venue. Permanent exhibits include works with paper, sculpture and photographs and works by contemporary artists like Klimt, Kokoschka and some lesser known modern artists. Besides the Museum of Modern Art, the Rupertinum also has a library, a restaurant and a bookshop.

Modern Art Gallery
9) Modern Art Gallery
The Modern Art Gallery is one of the museums of modern art in Salzburg. It is housed in a modern building and is located at the top of the Monchsberg Mountain.
The Modern Art Gallery was built to house twentieth and twenty first century contemporary art works. It is a modern building designed by the Munich based Freidrich Hoff Zwink team of architects. The design offered flexibility to display art in different types of exhibition formats. The façade is made of local Untersberg marble and the interior covers an area of 2,300 square meters. The façade has chords of Mozart’s Don Giovanni written in rhythmic slots. This was accomplished using a computer program. The design was inspired by a 19th century water tower. It has three floors of exhibition space and a restaurant with a terrace offering spectacular views of the city of Salzburg.
