The city of Monterey was established in 1770 and was the capital of California between 1777 and 1849. Having been under Mexican rule, Monterey is a wonderful gem of a city with a mixed culture, wonderful natural landscapes and a friendly population. Welcome to the historical center of California!
1) Monterey Bay Aquarium
Founded more than 25 years ago, this wonderful aquarium is one of the best places to visit and spend some time in. Each year, almost two million visitors come here to see more than 35,000 plants and animals, altogether representing 623 species. The most notable sight is a giant tank that holds 1.3 million liters of sea water. This astonishing view of ocean life is a great lesson for both parents and children.

2) Lower Presidio Historic Park
This huge park looks like a natural sanctuary. It contains the presidio complex - government buildings and their annexes. The park has a few distinct areas - the green grass area, the presidio area, and the museum area. The museum within the park is a piece of history and it holds documents, books and other interesting exhibits. Many city holidays and reunions are spent here. Army festivals and contests are a real delight.
3) Fisherman's Wharf
Back in the 1960s this wharf used to be a wholesale fish market. This is one of the city's attractions, the historic air and the view still retain their beauty. It was built in 1870, and, after an accident in 1923, gained 750 feet in the reconstruction. Today, this is an exotic arcade of seafood restaurants, open-air bars, and formal indoor dining. The view over the bay is best enjoyed at sunset.

4) Dennis the Menace Park
Familiar with the Dennis the Menace movie? Great! This park might be the best part of your trip, especially if you have your precious children with you. Hours and hours of joy, sliding, train and maze fun - for the whole family. The entire park is oriented to please everyone, from toddlers to elders. Cherish the moments of open-air freedom. In the evenings this is a nice place for a romantic walk.

5) Monterey State Beach
This beach is a favorite place for surfers and tidepool watchers, for visitors and locals. Everyone also enjoys kayaking, kite-flying and volleyball. The flat part of the beach is an excellent place for beachcombing. All over the area the joy of playing and fun is a rule. You can have some rest from the hectic pace of life in the city, forget about your troubles and spend some time with your family or lover.

6) Robert's Lake Park
Monterey is famous not only for its great beaches, bays and wharfs. Robert's Lake Park is a great place for picnics, active rest and those looking for a breath of fresh air. The lakes are large, so don't be surprised to see a lot of fishermen here. This particular park is one of the best in Monterey.

7) Sand City
Sand City is a very small city in Monterey County and it has a tiny population of 300 persons. Once, this area was an industrial part of Monterey. Sand City was incorporated into Monterey in 1960 and the post office opened in 1961. A walk in here will give you a better understanding of what an industrial area was like, long ago.

8) Metz Park
This is an average local park, but not the one filled with lots of trees, benches and mothers with their babies or lovers holding hands. This is a baseball park! Baseball is the principal sport in Monterey, and the city has lots of parks, schools and baseball clubs. Metz park is a place where everyone can play, even those who will be holding a ball for the first time in their lives!
9) Monterey Graveyard
This particular graveyard is totally unusual. It has a circular shape, and the roads within it seem to compose the sign of peace. It is a very sunny and quiet place for the locals. It is more like a little oasis of green and a great outdoor location. The tomb stones have varied shapes and styles. It is a nice place for children too.
