Nassau is the capital of Bahamas and therefore offers several museums for tourists to visit. As with many cities set on an island in the ocean, one of the most popular museums is the Pirates Museum. Nassau also provides a plethora of other outstanding museums such as the Museum of Art and Historical Museum.

Art Museum
1) Art Museum
The Art Museum contains permanent collections of art from the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum displays European and Western paintings, as well as Bahamian Art and Visual art. It is the main art institution on the Bahamas and a terrific place to learn about the history of art. The museum also provides a souvenir shop.

Pirates of Nassau Museum
2) Pirates of Nassau Museum
The Pirates of Nassau Museum is a very popular museum, located in a long building with several rooms that depict the life of a pirate. Tourists will discover terrific wax figures of the pirates, their weapons, and the overall ambiance of the 17th century pirate village.

Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation
3) Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation
The Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation educates visitors on their way of life, conditions, and how they where sold. The museum is located in the Vendue House, a landmark building from the 19th century. The Vendue House use to be an auction venue where all types of products were sold, including slaves. The museum is named after a slave called "Pompey" who revolted against slavery.

Balcony House Museum
4) Balcony House Museum
The actual home is 220 years old and is the oldest wooden house in The Bahamas. The infrastructure represents the architecture of the 18th century and opened to public as the Balcony House Museum in 1994. Here you will learn about the immigrants of the Bahamas as well as admire the sacred architecture.
Nassau Public Library & Museum
5) Nassau Public Library & Museum
The Nassau Public Library & Museum is situated in a house that was once a jail. The jail was constructed in 1797 and today provides the opportunity for visitors to observe the cells where former prisoners once stayed. The museum offers a collection of relics from the Arawak Indians, as well as some very old colonial documents and prints.

6) Bahamas Historical Museum
The Bahamas Historical Museum is a small museum which provides information in regards to the history of the island from the pre-Columbian period to the modern age. The museum features several Bahamian anthropological and archaeological artifacts in its permanent exhibits.
