The Viking Museum, located beneath the Nordea bank building, is built upon the site of an archaeological excavation of Viking Age artifacts. The museum provides information regarding the history of the Vikings, as well as replicas of items on display at the Moesgaard Museum, located near Aarhus. After a period of renovation, the museum reopened during the Aarhus Viking Town Market on May 24, 2008.
ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum
5) ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum
ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum is one of the largest art museums in northern Europe, at 10 stories tall and an area of 17,000 square meters. Danish architect Schmidt Hammer Lassen won the design competition in 1997, and the museum was opened on April 8, 2004. Featuring a shop, café and restaurant, the museum is divided into three permanent collections: Danish Golden Age 1770–1900, Danish Modernism 1900–1960 and contemporary art. It also includes The 9 Spaces, a “gallery in progress,” where one or two rooms are done each year. The number 9 refers to Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and the nine circles of hell. The rooms are painted black to contrast with the bright white exterior.
