Yokohama is the second largest city of Japan. There are many small museums in the city, some of which are specific to Asia, like the Silk Museum. Also there are some unusual museums, like the Doll Museum. This self-guided tour covers all the most popular museums in Yokohama.

Yokohama Museum of Art
1) Yokohama Museum of Art
The Yokohama Museum of Art was established in 1989. Set in the futuristic district of Minato Mirai, it is housed in a beautiful building created by a famous Japanese designer. The museum displays works by renowned artists, such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, as well as many Japanese artists. Dadaist and Surrealist works occupy a special place among the exhibits.

Nippon Maru Ship Museum
2) Nippon Maru Ship Museum
Nippon Maru Ship is said to be "swan on the Pacific Ocean." It was built in 1930 and is now a ship museum. Prior to that, it was a training ship for apprentice sailors. The ship became a museum largely due to its well-preserved original design. When on board, make sure to visit the Captain's Cabin, the Officer's Salon and a merchant marine classroom.

3) Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History
The Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History exhibits a rich collection of artifacts on the history and culture of Yokohama. Visitors to the museum may also take advantage of the in-house library. The museum is set in a splendid building erected in 1904.

NYK Maritime Museum
4) NYK Maritime Museum
The NYK Maritime Museum is one of the most visited museums in Yokohama. It is situated on the waterfront. Here you can learn about the history of shipping in Japan. The displays include model ships, uniforms, photos, furnishings, biographies of ship captains, and there is also a library with books on maritime topics. The museum shop sells souvenirs.

Yokohama Customs Museum
5) Yokohama Customs Museum
The Yokohama Customs Museum provides evidence of corruption in Yokohama in the early years of the port. The display includes contraband items, and describes dishonest methods for sidestepping the customs. The museum edifice was built in 1936 and is called "the Queen". Its mosque-like tower is a prominent landmark of Yokohama.

Silk Museum
6) Silk Museum
Asia is the home of silk and Japan has always been famous for its silk trade. The Silk Museum of Yokohama was opened in 1959. It provides insight into the science and technology of silk production, from cocoons making the precious material to beautiful costumes. Museums of this kind are few and far between.

Yokohama Doll Museum
7) Yokohama Doll Museum
The Yokohama Doll Museum is a true lure for kids. There are about 13,000 dolls from all over the world, including folk dolls and modern dolls. Some of the dolls are of historical value. The museum can tell you about the history of Yokohama, as there is a connection between the dolls and the city. Here you can also learn about the practice of doll exchange between nations.
