Penang is home to a number of beautiful churches rich in history and religious heritage. They are all situated close to one another so if you take our Penang Churches Walking Tour you can see them all in one trip. Highlights include the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the well-known St George's Anglican Church, which are both a significant part of the city’s architectural heritage.
1) Church of the Immaculate Conception
This beautiful blue and white church was established in 1899 by Portuguese settlers. It’s widely known among locals and tourists alike. Restored in the 1970s, this tall edifice boasts a giant cross and a wonderful statue of Saint Mary under the entrance.

2) Cantonese Methodist Church
This church was founded in 1967 for the Methodist community of Penang. Worshippers come here to attend services each Sunday, when the chapel is open to the public. The building stands out for its triangle-shaped roof, which resembles that of a Chinese pagoda.

3) Penang Baptist Church
Constructed in 1978, this church started out being based within a bungalow in the 1950s, when it was the first place of worship for Baptists in Penang. This elegant colonial building is most notable for its beautiful stained glass front window.

4) St. Paul's Church
St. Paul's is an Anglican church in Penang that operates mostly through Mandarin Chinese. The present building was consecrated in 1950, although people have worshipped at the site since the 1880s. This small grey building bears some traces of Gothic style, with flamboyant windows and an unusual five-story annex.

5) Church of Our Lady of Sorrows
This Catholic church is for Chinese-speaking followers in Penang. The first church on the site dates from 1888, at a time when the British settlement of the area had been followed by Chinese settlers who converted to Catholicism. In 1958 the building was restored and redesigned. It has a 107-foot high bell tower with bris-soleil windows, plus a façade decorated with a large ornate fan-light.

6) Georgetown Baptist Church
Founded in 1956, the Georgetown Baptist Church serves its community in a number of different ways. Sunday service is offered in three different languages, while the church also provides food for the homeless. The building itself is interesting because of its color-mosaic windows and minimalist shape that are unusual compared to other local places of worship.

7) Cathedral of the Assumption
Situated on Farquar Street, the Cathedral of the Assumption is one of the most famous churches in town. Built in 1860, it was extended in 1928 to accommodate more worshippers. This Catholic cathedral has the hallmarks of a colonial building, with lots of high windows that give it a very elegant appearance.

8) St. George's Church
The St. George's Church, which is named after England’s patron saint, is the oldest Anglican church in all of southeast Asia. Built by convict labor in 1818, it was designed by Captain Robert Smith, a military engineer. A memorial to Captain Francis Light in the form of a Greek temple with a marble slab stands in the grounds of the church. The site is currently undergoing restoration works.
