Modern Tirana boasts a range of towers and colorfully painted apartment buildings. But there are also elegant, distinctive, historic buildings dating back to the nineteenth century. Take this tour to visit some of Tirana's most stunning architectural achievements.
1) Clock Tower of Tirana
The Clock Tower of Tirana, or Kulla e Sahatit in Albanian, was built in 1822 by Haxhi Et`hem Bey, who also oversaw the construction of the Et'hem Bey Mosque. The tower has a spiral staircase with 90 steps. The structure is 35 meters high, and until 1970 it was the tallest building in Tirana. The clock tower originally had a bell from Venice that marked the time every hour. In 1928 the Municipality of Tirana purchased a new German clock to replace the Venetian one. The clock was destroyed by bombs during World War II and was replaced in 1946 with a Roman numeral clock from a church in Shkoder, Albania. In 1970 the Roman numeral clock was replaced by a Chinese clock. The tower underwent renovation in 1981 and again in 1999. Access to the top of the tower has been available free of charge since 1996.

2) Et'hem Bey Mosque
The Et'hem Bey Mosque is located in the center of the Albanian capital of Tirana. Construction started in 1789 under the direction of Molla Bey, and it was finished in 1823 by his son Ethem Pasha (Haxhi Ethem Bey), great-grandson of Sulejman Pasha. Under the totalitarian regime of the Socialist People's Republic of Albania, the mosque was closed. On January 18, 1991, despite opposition from communist authorities, 10,000 people entered the mosque carrying flags. This was at the onset of the fall of communism in Albania. The frescoes of the mosque are still life paintings of trees, waterfalls and bridges, a rarity in Islamic art. Tours of the mosque are given daily, although not during prayer service.

Tirana's Pyramid is a modern pyramid-style building. It was built as a memorial museum for the ex-communist leader of Albania, Enver Hoxha. The building was designed by Hoxha’s daughter in 1988. It was considered to be the most expensive building erected in Tirana at the time it was built. Today it is the International Center of Culture.

5) Twin Towers in Tirana
The Twin Towers, located in the center of Tirana, are considered the most luxurious buildings in the city. These two 15-story glass buildings are situated close to one other and have the same design and colors, which is the reason they are called “twins’. They are painted with beautiful blue and gray colors.

6) Colorful Painted Building in Bllok
The majority of Tirana's apartment buildings are painted in bright colors. The idea for and implementation of the city's bright color scheme belonged to Edi Rama, Tirana’s mayor, who was also a trained artist. Rama advocated using blue, green, orange, purple, red, and yellow for Tirana's buildings. You could say the city was Edi Rama’s canvas, and the painted building in Bllok is his masterpiece.

7) Presidential Palace of Tirana
The Presidential Palace of Tirana is used by the Albanian government. Construction on the palace began in 1939 under the direction of Ahmet Zogu and was completed in 1941. Zogu left Albania in 1939, before the building was finished. The palace was built in the Rationalist style, and its architecture is unique not only in Albania, but in the entire formerly-fascist region of Italy. The palace has basso-reliefs that were covered with drapes in the 1970s, during the Cultural Revolution, but which were not destroyed.
