7) Buenos Aires Zoo
The Buenos Aires Zoo covers a space of over 45 acres in the Palermo district of the city and has over 2500 species. It is a conservation, research and teaching facility.
The Buenos Aires Zoo was established in a small portion of the Parquet Tres de Febrero in 1875. The land once belonged to the exiled Argentine President, Juan Manuel de Rosas. In 1888, the zoo was separated from the rest of the park. It was privatized in 1991 and natural habitats were constructed so that the traditional cages housing the animals could be removed.
The Buenos Aires Zoo has a beautiful swan lake, a reptile house, grassy areas inhabited by native birds and rodents and a farmyard where children can feed and pet donkeys, goats, cows, rabbits and other farm animals. The tropical rainforest has an array of plant species and the only animal is a large iguana. The zoo also has big cats, red pandas, monkeys, small mammals, polar bears, llamas and camels. The lion lives in a castle complex surrounded by a moat and the elephant lives in a house that looks like an Indian temple. The aquarium has penguins, seals, different types of freshwater and sea water fishes including the piranha. The zoo stays open from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm, Tuesdays through Sundays.
