Atwater Market
2) Atwater Market
Atwater Market has been an intrinsic part of Montreal right from when it came into existence in 1933. Visit this popular market where you will find a number of restaurants, Premiere Moisson Bakeries and butchers.
Also known as the Farmer’s Market, Atwater Market is situated in Montreal’s Saint-Henri area. Outside the market, you will find a number of stalls where farmers sell imported as well as local produce. You will also find a wine shop and two cheese stores here. Bargaining is strictly not encouraged but you can be assured of quality.
Architect Ludger Lemieux and his son Paul Lemieux designed the unique Art deco of the building. Close to this market lie the Green Avenue, Lionel-Groulx Metro Station and Lachine Canal. This market is frequented by bike riders predominantly due to the easy access provided to them.
The market is connected to Saint-Patrick Street by a pedestrian bridge used mainly by cyclists. The bridge also connects Atwater Market to a bicycle path that leads to the other side of Lachine Canal.

Cours Mont-Royal
3) Cours Mont-Royal
A lot of fun and excitement is in store for you at Downtown Montreal, such as the popular upscale shopping centre Cours Mont-Royal. It was in 1988 that the Mount Royal Hotel was converted to a shopping mall and has since been offering discerning customers a range of designer brands.
On your trip to Montreal, browse through the exclusive boutiques and shop for your favourite fashion clothes and accessories. This shopping mall offers a great ambiance and a unique shopping experience for men and women.
Mount Royal Hotel was constructed in 1922, designed by a prominent architectural firm Ross and MacDonald. This hotel featured 1,100 rooms and was the largest in the British Empire at that time.
The French name Les Cours originates from the fact that the shopping mall is organized around four courts. David Ruben Piqtoukun, a popular artist, is the author of six bird-human sculptures that are placed under the main skylight.
Go right up to the top of the building and you will find luxury condos on many floors. All condos have separate entrances and elevators, and are completely independent of the mall. As it is connected to the underground network of transportation hubs, hotels and shopping centres of the city, you can access this building through the Peel Metro Station.

Underground City
4) Underground City
Officially known as La Ville Souterraine in French, Montreal’s Underground City is frequented by tourists from all over the world. Here you can find a set of complexes in Downtown Montreal interconnected below and above the ground. This is the largest complex of its kind in the world and is also known as the indoor city.
Underground City was created based on urbanist Vincent Ponte’s vision. In 2006 November, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at Place Ville-Marie in his honour. As you browse around this city, you will find that some portions of it are above the ground too.
They are connected by tunnels and have excellent lighting. Both under and above the ground are air conditioned and most tunnels are large enough to accommodate shops on both sides. Banks, condominiums, hotels, apartment buildings, shopping malls, seven metro stations, universities, museums, Bell centre amphitheatre and arena, a regional bus terminal and two commuter train stations operate from the 32 km tunnels spread over 12 square kilometres.

Complexe Desjardins
5) Complexe Desjardins
On your trip to Montreal, pay a visit to the city’s downtown where you will find one of the best multifunctional buildings called Complexe Desjardins. Apart from many office buildings, this complex features a hotel and a shopping mall.
As this complex is close to some of the major tourist attractions in Montreal such as Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, the Quartier des Spectacles and Place des Arts, it is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Complexe Desjardins offers at least 200 public activities for free each year. Access to this complex is from Rene Levesque Boulevard, Jeanne Mance Street, Saint-Urbain Street and Saint Catherine Street.
Enter Complexe Desjardins and you will be impressed with its massive size. It is in fact known to be a city within a city with a coverage area of 4 million square feet. In Montreal Metropolitan area, this is the largest building with four majestic towers and houses many government and private offices.
Complexe Desjardins was constructed in 1976 and has many restaurants and shopping centres apart from the Hyatt Regency Montreal Hotel with its impressively large atrium. This complex has a total of 99 floors and three parking levels. Enjoy delicious food at one of the best food courts here.

Little Italy

Montreal has a large population of Italian Canadians and most of them have settled at Little Italy. This settlement lies to the city’s North East and can be accessed from the downtown in five minutes. This is where many families have made their home after World War II in the nineteenth century.

A visit to Little Italy is worth it on your trip to Montreal. Enjoy the unique cultural treasures such as La Difesa Church this vibrant neighbourhood has to offer. La Difesa Church was constructed in 1919 and got its name from a miracle that occurred in La Difesa, Casacalenda, Italy.

You will be absolutely mesmerized with the beautiful fresco decorations here by Guido Nincheri a prominent artist of the sixties and seventies. Do not miss a visit to Dante Park. This park is named after the father of Italian language Dante Alighieri.

Shop to your heart’s content at the line walkways where you will find fresh produce like Calamari and Italian Parsley. Check out the fabulous Italian shoes and clothes at the St. Laurent Blvd. A visit to Little Italy is certainly incomplete without enjoying Italian food.
