The main religious buildings of Santiago were built in the 17th and 18th centuries and are set in the center of the city. These amazing buildings and monuments are mostly Catholic temples but there are a few Orthodox churches as well. The following self-guided walking tour will lead you to these sacred places:

The Parish Church of the Guardian Angels
1) The Parish Church of the Guardian Angels
The Parish Church of the Guardian Angels was designed in neo-Renaissance architectural style. It is composed mainly of brick and the inside is finished in such a way that it looks like marble. Twin towers and a great dome characterize the outside of the church.

VeraCruz Church
2) VeraCruz Church
VeraCruz Church was built in the 19th century in honor of Pedro de Valdivia, founder of Santiago. He once lived in this historical monument of Santiago. The church is a neoclassical construction with a Triumphal Arc at the entrance and boasts some traditional colonial relics.

Church of San Francisco
3) Church of San Francisco
Church of San Francisco is a famous ancient church of Santiago. There is a museum that displays religious paintings and other religious items right near the church. In the Franciscan temple stands the Virgen del Socorro, which was the first icon of the Virgin Mary that appeared in Santiago.

4) Church of Our Lady of Grace
Church of Our Lady of Grace, also known as Church of Saint Augustin, dates back to the 17th century. It is the second oldest churche in Santiago and still possesses some of the first religious sculptures and paintings of the colonial era.

Basílica de la Merced
5) Basílica de la Merced
Basílica de la Merced is the most amazing religious site in Santiago. It is a historical place, as some great people of Chilean history are buried there. Today it is richly decorated with 25 bronze bells adorning the temple.

Santiago Municipal Cathedral
6) Santiago Municipal Cathedral
The Municipal Cathedral you see today is the 5th church built in its spot thanks to mutiple earthquakes. It was built in Baroque and classical styles with many statues and curves. The altar is decorated with marble, bronze and lapis lazuli, the Chilean semi precious stone.

Church of Saint Anne has been rebuilt several times because of damages suffered during earthquakes. It has still kept its original neoclassical style, with the front of the church boasting a Baroque style with traditional columns.

8) Church of Saint Domingo
The Church of Saint Domingo is a historical monument of Santiago. It is an amazing Baroque building that features 2 Bavarian Baroque towers at the entrance composed of bricks and paintings of colonial period.

Church and Convent of the Franciscan Recoleta is now a national historical monument of Santiago. This small, traditional 19th century church also houses a museum.

10) Church and Convent Recoleta Dominica
Church and Convent Recoleta Dominica was built in the 18th century. The Romanesque church altar and marble columns are taken from classical Roman buildings from that time period. Today the church is considered a national monument.
