Merks Motor Museum, Nuremberg

Merks Motor Museum, Nuremberg

Merks Motor Museum has been Nuremberg's first car museum since 2011. It is located in the northeastern Schafhof district and consists of a private collection of the Merk family. It is part of the North Bavarian Industriestrasse.

The history of the collection began with the purchase of a Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet , built in 1957, which Claus Merk acquired in 1975 and renovated together with his wife. As a result, the Merk family acquired additional vehicles and thus enlarged the collection. As a businessman who has been active in the real estate industry since the 1990s, Claus Merk acquired the site of the former Johann Schlee window factory in Klingenhofstrasse in the Schafhof district. After the two-year restoration of the former approximately 2000 square meter production hall, the family set up Nuremberg's first car museum in it, which opened in April 2011.

The museum also has a museum shop and a bistro that can be rented for private celebrations. In addition, auctions and flea markets are often held in the museum.

The historical center of Nuremberg, Old Town (German: Altstadt) is easily differentiated from other parts of the city. Divided in two by the Pegnitz River, the district represents a complex architectural ensemble with a maze of historical lanes (e.g. Weissgerbergasse) packed with half-timber houses, linked by centuries-old bridges, such as Maxbrücke, and set against the picturesque backdrops of...  view more

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Despite Nuremberg's storybook appearance, the city's not so distant past is rather dark. Back in 1933, amid the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazis worked really hard to leave their stamp on the city, prettifying it and renovating the architecture in a bid to accommodate their massive rallies and bombastic military parades.
