Archivio di Stato di Siena (State Archives of Siena), Siena

The State Archives of Siena, located in the historic Piccolomini Palace (Palazzo Piccolomini), serves as a crucial repository of the city's past, preserving a treasure trove of documents that chronicle Siena's extensive history. This building, constructed from 1469 to 1510 by Giacomo and Andrea Piccolomini Todeschini, relatives of Pope Pius II, was originally the residence of the Piccolomini family. Architect Rossellino, known for his Renaissance designs, was responsible for the architectural layout of the palazzo.

In its earlier days, the Piccolomini Palace served varied roles, including hosting a school for young noblemen in the 17th century, under the direction of Celso Tolomei. By 1824, it transitioned into a civic role when it was donated to the city of Siena, subsequently accommodating several government offices. It was Grand Duke Leopold II who, in 1858, decreed the establishment of the city archives within this grand structure, which has since continued to function as the archival repository.

The State Archives themselves are divided into three main sections: government records, diplomatic archives, and notarial or contractual documents. Among the most significant holdings of the archives are the "Tavolette" of the Biccherna, the medieval municipal tax office records, dating from 1258 to 1500. These records are particularly notable not only for their content but also for their artistic presentation. Painted on wood panels using egg tempera and gold leaf, each panel is adorned with images representing various city guilds, accompanied by Latin text, and crafted by renowned artists of the time.

Additionally, the archives contain a wealth of documents supplied by prominent local families and religious groups, further enriching the historical narrative preserved within the walls of the Archivio di Stato di Siena. This institution not only safeguards these invaluable records but also serves as a focal point for historical research and cultural heritage, reflecting the rich legacy of Siena and its surrounding regions.
