Kurala Kylamäki, Turku

Kurala Kylamäki, Turku

Kurala Kylämäki is a museum and cultural recreation area owned by the city of Turku, where the rural milieu of the 1940s and 1950s is maintained with buildings, gardens, meadows and fields.

There are four farms in the village – Iso-Rasi, Vähä-Rasi, Iso-Kohmo and Vähä-Kohmo – and their 26 buildings. The area was protected by the Antiquities Act in 1980, and the buildings by the site plan in 1984. The village of Kurala belongs to the Aurajoki National Landscape and the Turku National Urban Park, and is one of the nationally significant built cultural environments determined by the Finnish Museum Agency.

In Kylämäki, among other things, the manual skills and working methods that have shaped the current traditional landscape of the village are maintained. The buildings of Iso-Kohmo, located in the middle of the hill, have been chosen as the core of the farm. In the experimental workshop, manual skills are maintained in a wide range of areas, from ancient techniques to art workshops. Involving the public in activities and passing on manual skills from one generation to another is a key goal.

Kurala Kylämäki is an open cultural recreation area and museum belonging to the Turku Museum Center. The museum is open during the summer season, when the public can get to know the main building of the 1950s farm as well as the experimental workshop presenting the working methods of the past. Kurala is a village of living history, where the museum tells about the past through activities and doings. The mistress of Iso-Kohmo's house works in her hut with her daily chores and socializes with her guests while working.

The atmosphere of the museum includes the sounds and smells that bring the past to the present day. Visitors to the experimental workshop can try their hand skills themselves. During the winter season, seasonal events are organized in the museum. Groups can get to Kurala for a guided tour on request, even when the museum is closed. Workshops and manual skills courses are organized at the experimental workshop throughout the year.
