Polish Aviation Museum, Krakow

Polish Aviation Museum, Krakow (must see)

Krakow boasts a plethora of art and craft museums that illuminate the city's rich and dynamic history. Emerging from a region that has weathered numerous conflicts, these museums offer a glimpse into the city's storied past. Among them, the Polish Aviation Museum stands out as a notable destination for history enthusiasts. Situated on the historic grounds once home to the second largest Polish airfield during World War II, this museum provides a compelling stop on any historical tour of the city. Within its walls, visitors are presented with poignant mementos from various wars, most notably the Nazi invasion of Poland, serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance.

The Aviation Museum houses an impressive array of aircraft, spanning the periods both before and after the war. These aircraft were instrumental in the conflicts, utilized by opposing forces for combat. Uniquely, the museum holds a distinction as the sole repository of pre-war Polish military aircraft worldwide. Notable examples include the PZL P.11, the world's only surviving specimen, and the PWS-26. These aircraft endured due to their portrayal as war trophies by the Germans, eventually becoming part of the aforementioned post-war collection. Beyond this distinction, the museum proudly showcases a comprehensive assortment of aircraft types that were developed or utilized by Poland after 1945.

Why You Should Visit:
Truly an amazing museum with many interactive exhibits for all ages; not just for adult males because you may see many women and children taking great interest in the exhibits.
One hangar, in particular, stands out as it details the Cold War period between Communist Europe and the "Free World".

Tip:
It may get dark early in autumn/winter so view the outside aircraft first, then the indoor displays until 5pm.
