Basilica de la Merce (Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy), Barcelona

During the 18th century, the harbourside neighborhood of La Mercè in Barcelona was inhabited by wealthy nobles and merchants who prospered from the city's maritime trade. As the 19th century progressed, many of them relocated to the more fashionable Eixample district. Since then, Carrer de la Mercè and its surrounding streets have become home to a series of traditional taverns known as "tascas" or "bodegas", where enjoying a glass of wine straight from the barrel and sampling tapas is one of the most authentic experiences in the Old Town.

At Mercè Square ("Plaça de la Mercè"), the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy takes center stage during the city's largest annual celebration, the Festes de la Mercè, held every September. This vibrant festival is dedicated to the co-patroness of Barcelona, and her image is paraded from the church. It's a week-long extravaganza filled with parties, parades, special events, and concerts, culminating in breathtaking fireworks along the seafront.

Although the basilica has undergone remodeling and expansion between the 14th and 15th centuries, it no longer retains its original Gothic appearance. Nevertheless, it is known for hosting commendable music concerts and occasional performances by excellent gospel choirs.
