Bibliotheek van de Universiteit Utrecht, a remarkable piece of medieval architecture, played an important role in the history of the city. From 1808 to 1811 it served as the palace of King Louis I. Its exterior was redone in the late-Baroque style and decorated with red bricks. The library holds a renowned collection of old manuscripts, prints and maps.
