Cemitério dos Ingleses (English Cemetery), Funchal

The English Cemetery, also referred to as the British Cemetery of Madeira, serves as the burial ground for the English community residing on the island of Madeira. It includes six Commonwealth burials from the First and Second World Wars and all seamen in the Royal or Merchant navies.

The cemetery dates back to the 1770s, prior to which Madeiran law mandated that the mortal remains of non-Roman Catholics be buried at sea by throwing them off the cliffs at Garajau. A statue of Christ, known as Cristo Rei, was later built in remembrance of this practice.

British interests in Madeira established the Nation's Burial Ground close to Funchal's original city walls in 1772. The site of the previous cemetery now houses a small public square and car showrooms. In 1890, all remains and headstones were transferred to an adjoining plot, which also features a British military cemetery from 1808 and a chapel from 1865.

The cemetery, under the administration of the Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity, is named the British Cemetery. However, it contains graves of various nationalities, including numerous German Protestants. While there is free public access to the cemetery, the archives have limited public access. Additionally, Holy Trinity Church offers a weekly historical tour of the cemetery and chapel.
