Pravoslavna cerkev (Orthodox Church), Ljubljana

Pravoslavna cerkev (Orthodox Church), Ljubljana

Dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyril and Methodius, this church stands tall in the Serbo-Byzantine Revival style, boasting five domes topped with golden crosses. Construction spanned from 1932 to 1936, with Serbian painters adding their touch to the interior frescoes from 1986 to 1997. The striking iconostasis, crafted by a prominent woodcarver workshop in Debar (Macedonia), has been decorated with icons by Slovene painter Mirko Šubic in 1940.

As the primary Orthodox church in Ljubljana, it received a blessing in October 2005 from Serbian Patriarch Pavle. The ceremony also marked the installation of relics of Saint Athanasius, brought from the Vatican by Tomáš Špidlík, symbolizing the unity of Christian faiths. Serbian President Boris Tadić paid a visit in 2009, and in 2010, the church was granted the status of a local cultural monument.

Nestled close to the National Gallery and Modern Art Museum, this church welcomes visitors freely. Don't miss the chance to admire the Orthodox icons available for purchase at the entrance.
