Banteay Samre, Siem Reap

Banteay Samre, Siem Reap

Banteay Samré is an impressive Hindu temple located in the Angkor archaeological complex in Siem Reap. Constructed in the early 12th century during the reigns of Suryavarman II and Yasovarman II, it represents the Angkor Wat style. The temple is named after the ancient Samré people and shares materials and intricate carvings with the renowned Banteay Srei temple. It underwent a meticulous restoration in the 1930s, restoring its grandeur and unique architectural features.

The temple features a recognizable Angkor Wat-style tower and bears resemblance to Thai monuments. It is believed to have been built by a high-ranking court official and consists of a central shrine, libraries, and concentric gallery enclosures. Visitors approach the temple via a raised causeway, suggesting it was part of a larger complex.

The outer wall is 6 meters high, and gopuras adorn the inner enclosure. Banteay Samré stands as a testament to the cultural and artistic heritage of the Angkor civilization, attracting visitors interested in exploring Cambodia's ancient wonders.
