Esglesia de Sant Felip Neri (Church of St. Philip Neri), Barcelona

The focal point of the quaint Felip Neri square in Barcelona's Gothic quarter, this church holds a significant historical presence. Constructed from 1721 to 1752, it was one of the few examples of the Baroque style in Barcelona. Its architecture showcases a single cross-vaulted nave, a rectangular apse, and side chapels adorned with neoclassical altars and paintings by the Catalan art nouveau artist, Joan Llimona.

The church's main façade exudes simplicity, while the doorway is crowned by a semi-circular structure featuring the figure of Saint Philip Neri. However, it is the deeply scarred walls that truly captivate attention. These profound marks etched into the stone serve as a poignant reminder of the devastating aerial bombardment that occurred in January 1938, during the height of the Spanish Civil War. Tragically, 42 lives, including many innocent children seeking refuge in the basement of the convent, were tragically lost when a bomb struck directly above their shelter.

Despite its painful past, the square offers solace and tranquility today. Nestled under the protective canopy of trees and enhanced by the gentle melodies of a serene fountain at its heart, it's a haven of peace and contemplation. The surrounding buildings, once home to the city's guilds of coppersmiths and shoemakers, add a touch of historical charm to the ambiance.
