Esglesia de Santa Maria de Montalegre (Church of Our Lady of Montalegre), Barcelona
The community of nuns, originally located at the Montalegre hermitage in the present-day Conreria de Tiana, moved to this site in Barcelona in 1362. The order ceased to exist in 1593, and the monastery was transformed into the Episcopal Seminary of Our Lady of Montalegre. In 1802, it became the Casa de la Caritat ("House of Charity"), now occupired by the Centre for Cultural Studies and Resources (CERC).
In 1901, the construction of a new church was entrusted to the architect August Font, and it was consecrated the following year. The church showcases a Neo-Romanesque style with a Latin cross layout. Unfortunately, it suffered damage in 1936, but was later restored after the war. Notable features include the stunning stained glass windows and rose windows created in 1902, the impressive main altar and baldachin added in 1940, the image of the Virgin Mary sculpted by Jaume Busquets Mollera in 1952, and the intricate forged iron spiderweb designed in 1940. It is also worth mentioning the chapel of La Miraculosa, adorned with stained glass windows and a rose window designed by Antoni Rigalt in 1908.

Gothic Quarter Walking Tour
A walk around the Gothic Quarter is a journey through time to Barcelona’s oldest history, going back to times of Roman rule; in fact, the typically Roman grid plan is still visible today in the quarter's layout. Only a few roads are open for car traffic, so there will be little in the way of enjoying the many narrow, atmospheric streets filled with superb food, high-quality architecture,... view more
