Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent, Lagos

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent, Lagos

Convento de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent) is a Roman Catholic church built in Baroque style. The church was built in 1463 upon the initiative of Padre Cristóvão Dias, as the second convent of Portugal in those days. As the church is located outside the fortifications of old Lagos, it was severely damaged in the 1755 earthquake. Since then, the church has undergone several restorations, the last one having taken place in 2004. Today the church features a beautiful chapel with a single nave and a dome.
