Mili, Bregenz

Mili, Bregenz

Mili, a former military bathhouse fondly known by locals in Bregenz, stands as the oldest surviving bathing facility on Lake Constance. Situated along the curve of the Bay of Bregenz, just north of the city center, it rests snugly on the Bregenz lakeside promenade known as "Pipeline."

Established in 1825 to facilitate swimming lessons for military recruits, Mili later opened its doors to the public. Following its transition from French occupying forces to municipal management in 1961, and subsequent reconstruction after a fire in the 1970s and 80s, Mili evolved into a beloved open-air swimming spot.

Constructed entirely of wood in the form of a pile dwelling, Mili stands as a rare historical artifact, offering modern-day swimmers a glimpse into the past. Despite its age, the building retains much of its original character, with efforts made to preserve its traditional style. Shielded from the mainland by its U-shaped design and accessible only via a narrow wooden walkway, Mili provides a secluded and lake-oriented retreat.

Facing westward, Mili affords visitors uninterrupted views of the lake and enjoys long hours of evening sunlight. Access to the water is facilitated by a staircase leading from the main level, where ticketing and changing facilities are situated. Sunbathers can enjoy the upper-level sunbathing areas, each named with historical charm, such as "Sonnendeck," "Drachenfels," or "Afrika." For those seeking recreation, amenities like a table tennis table and diving board provide entertainment. Its unique U-shape and direct water access make Mili an ideal venue for water polo matches.
