Museum of Image and Sound, Sao Paulo

São Paulo Museum of Image and Sound (Museu da Imagem e do Som de São Paulo) is a public institution dedicated to audio-visual works. It was established in 1970 and is situated in São Paulo. The museum was conceived in the 1960s by Brazilian intellectuals, including Ricardo Cravo Albin, Paulo Emílio Salles Gomes, and Rudá de Andrade. Their vision aimed to fill a void in the country's cultural landscape by creating institutions focused on the study and preservation of new media, which had previously been overlooked by traditional museums.

Occupying a building spanning 5,000 square meters in the Pinheiros district, the museum was inaugurated in 1975. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it played a pivotal role as a hub for artistic diffusion and educational activities, establishing itself as a significant resource for research on Brazilian audio-visual production.

The museum boasts a collection exceeding 350,000 items, encompassing a diverse range of mediums such as films (including shorts, feature films, and documentaries), videos, records, photographs, and graphic design works. In addition, the museum actively engages in transcribing and documenting oral traditions, and it houses the LabMIS, a research and production center dedicated to new media, offering an artist-in-residence program.
