Eglise Reformee de France (Reformed Church of France), Cannes

The Reformed Church of France (Eglise Reformee de France) in Cannes, located on Notre-Dame Street within the scenic Alpes-Maritimes region, stands as a significant place of worship for the local Protestant community. Inaugurated in December 1874, the temple has undergone various enhancements and renovations that reflect its evolving role in the community.

One notable addition to the church was the installation of an organ in 1902, which marked a significant enhancement to its musical capabilities. This original instrument was later replaced in 1974 by a new organ, crafted by Pierre Saby, renowned for its mechanical action facilitated by ball bearing cables. This upgrade underscores the temple's commitment to preserving and enhancing its musical heritage.

From 2004 to 2006, extensive renovations were undertaken to preserve the temple's history and modernize its facilities. New stained glass windows by Jacques-Antoine Ducatez brought a contemporary flair while preserving the spiritual atmosphere. The wrought iron gate, designed by Annie Vallotton, pays homage to the temple's Protestant roots.

The church's ties to French Protestantism are highlighted by the incarceration of five pastors from 1689 to 1725 at Île Sainte-Marguerite, post the Edict of Nantes revocation. Their unwavering faith symbolizes the enduring spirit of Cannes' Protestant community. The Huguenot Memorial, founded in 1950 by Pastor Charles Monod and the Society for the History of French Protestantism, later became part of the Cannes Sea Museum in 1985. Managed by the association of friends of the Huguenot Memorial of Île Sainte-Marguerite, chaired by Cannes' pastor, it serves as a reminder of the Protestant community's resilience and faith.
