Eglise Sainte Eulalie (Sainte-Eulalie Church), Bordeaux

Eglise Sainte Eulalie (Sainte-Eulalie Church), Bordeaux

Across from Bordeaux's Saint André Hospital stands the Sainte Eulalie Church, a serene sanctuary offering solace and a remarkable architectural marvel waiting to be explored.

Originating in a 7th-century chapel, then evolving as a monastery, this Gothic church stands at a crucial city fortification corner. Its 1398 western vault is verified by an inscription. In the 15th century, the east was remodeled into a polygonal apse. More upgrades followed, including new chapels on the northeast and southeast corners, and the Saint Clair Chapel protecting Saint Roch's staff and Saint Clair's relics.

Lightning damaged the bell tower, leading to its 18th-century demolition. During the French Revolution, the church stored art from other Bordeaux churches. The nearby cemetery was forgotten. In the early 20th century, changes included removing the Gothic portal, reconstructing the facade, and expanding the church.

The church once held relics of seven blessed evangelizers of Novempopulania, guarding against invasions: Sever, Géronce, Justin, Clair, Babyle, Jean, and Polycarpe. Saint Roch's staff, revered for healing, drew lepers via the Leper's Door. The relics returned to their sanctuaries — Saint Clair in Lectoure (1855) and Saint Sever in Abbey of Saint-Sever (1875). The building became a Historical Monument in 1840 and was officially registered in 2004.
