Enjoy Contemporary Art Space, Wellington

Enjoy Contemporary Art Space, located in Wellington's Cuba Street arts district, is a hub for regional contemporary art. Founded in 2000 by artists Ciaran Begley, Ros Cameron, and Rachel Smithies, Enjoy was conceived as an artist-run space. Since its inception, it has evolved into a not-for-profit contemporary art space, dedicated to showcasing the works of emerging and mid-career artists through a variety of exhibitions, publications, public programs, and residencies.

The 'Enjoy' gallery, supported by Creative New Zealand and Wellington City Council, plays a vital role in the local and national art community. Enjoy is not just a space for art exhibitions; it also places a strong emphasis on critical writing and the production of printed exhibition catalogs and art-related publications, fostering a deeper engagement with contemporary art practices.

Governance at Enjoy is overseen by a Board of Trustees, comprising artists and arts professionals based in Wellington, ensuring that the gallery remains closely connected to the local arts scene. From 2001 to 2019, the organization was known as Enjoy Public Art Gallery, marking its commitment to public accessibility and engagement with art.

Enjoy's mission extends beyond merely presenting art; it aims to create opportunities for learning, exchange, and dialogue around contemporary art. Enjoy supports emerging artists, writers, and curators, providing a nurturing yet challenging environment. This approach underscores Enjoy's advocacy for the vital role of contemporary art in society, making it a key institution in New Zealand's cultural landscape.
