Marmara Esma Sultan, Istanbul

Marmara Esma Sultan, Istanbul

Originally a 'yalı' (waterside mansion), this three-story brick structure was presented to Esma Sultana as a wedding gift by her father, Sultan Abdülaziz, and remained in the possession of the Ottoman dynasty until 1915. The building was subsequently used first as a tobacco warehouse and then as a coal depot until 1975, when it was destroyed by a fire.

During the early 1990’s the Marmara hotel chain purchased the ruined structure and renovated it with additional designs and additions by the celebrated architect Gökhan Avcıoğlu. Today a modern steel and glass structure incorporating the original brick exterior serves as an event hall for cultural events and concerts and houses a restaurant and a bar.

Every June/July, the venue hosts concerts of the Istanbul International Music Festival and the Istanbul International Jazz Festival.
