Barra Lighthouse and Nautical Museum, Salvador

Barra Lighthouse and Nautical Museum, Salvador (must see)

The Barra Lighthouse is part of Santo Antônio da Barra Fort, built in 1536, the first fortification in the country. The fortification houses the Nautical Museum, which exhibits relics from the history of seafaring and the slave trade in Brazil. The Nautical Museum also has temporary exhibits featuring different aspects of the sea.

The Barra Lighthouse (sometimes referred to as Santo Antonio Lighthouse) is a conical tower 72 feet high. The first tower, built in the 17th century, was originally powered by whale oil.

The second tower was constructed in 1839 due to the need to update the kerosene lamp with an extensive reach. The lighthouse has a beam that reaches 18 miles.

The Barra lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses in Brazil that is open to the public. Barra Lighthouse and Santo Antônio da Barra Fort were listed as historic structures by the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute in 1938.
