German Pharmacy Museum, Heidelberg

German Pharmacy Museum, Heidelberg (must see)

The German Pharmacy Museum, known locally as Deutsches Apotheken Museum, is a museum that focuses on the history of pharmacy and medicine. The old apothecary is fully preserved with hundreds of medicine bottles, herbs and natural remedies.

The museum offers over 20,000 exhibits and bills itself as the world's most extensive collection on the history of apothecary. Books, oddities and an apothecary garden is on display. The laboratory, located in the domed apothecary tower, holds antique equipment. There are also interactive exhibits that allow children to play as they learn about the history of pharmacology.

The German Pharmacy Museum is located at the Heidelberg Castle, which is one of the first Renaissance buildings in Germany. Visitors can take a funicular to the museum or they can take a short hike up the hill.
