Tabacica Mosque, Mostar

The Tabacica Mosque in Mostar holds a significant historical and cultural value in the heart of the city's Old Town. It was constructed during the 16th and 17th centuries under the direction of Hajji Kurt, a member of the esteemed Mostar Kurt family. Situated on the right bank of the Neretva River, approximately 100 meters away from the renowned Old Bridge, the mosque stands close to the former Tabhana district, which housed leather processing workshops. The mosque derives its name from the term "Tabaci," referring to the leather tanners who worked in the area.

Initially, Tabacica Mosque featured a rectangular design with a slate roof and a slender twenty-meter-high minaret. The entrance was marked by a wooden porch, creating a distinct architectural appeal. Unfortunately, during the military operations in 1992 and 1993, the mosque suffered severe damage. The minaret was destroyed, the roof collapsed, and the wooden porch was reduced to ruins. The interior of the mosque was also devastated during this period.

However, the restoration project for Tabacica Mosque was undertaken. Historical monument architect Mr. Jean-Louis Taupin contributed his expertise to the project. After several years of meticulous work, the mosque was successfully restored and inaugurated in June 2000.

Today, Tabacica Mosque stands as a testament to the resilience and commitment of the people of Mostar to preserving their cultural heritage. Its restored beauty and historical significance continue to captivate visitors, offering them a glimpse into the rich history and architectural splendor of Mostar's past.
