Herz Jesu (Heart of Jesus Church), Innsbruck

Herz Jesu, which translates to "Heart of Jesus" in German, is a minor basilica built in the Renaissance style. It serves as a serene sanctuary where individuals can reflect on their thoughts and spiritual needs. Situated to the south of the Old City, Heart of Jesus offers a tranquil atmosphere for contemplation.

Constructed between 1896 and 1897, the gallery basilica and accompanying monastery were designed by master builder Peter Huter, along with builders Alfons Mayr and Franz Mayr. Architect and sculptor Josef Schmid oversaw the completion of the church's furnishings by 1909, following the original plans.

The main facade of the monastery church, facing Maximilianstraße, is characterized by three sections divided by buttresses. It features three neo-Romanesque stone portals, triforic windows above, and a prominent central tower topped with a pointed helmet. Adorning the facade are statues of Jesus and saints Alfons and Clemens Maria Hofbauer.

Upon entering, visitors encounter a square vaulted vestibule leading to a two-bay central nave, followed by a pseudo transept and a choir bay with a semicircular apse, all featuring ribbed vaults. Ceiling paintings, inspired by designs from Josef Schmid, were executed by painters Jonas Rantner, Heinrich Schmid, Anton Marte, Mentel, and Eduard Sailer. These paintings depict scenes from the life of Jesus in the nave, the heavenly Jerusalem in the crossing, and the crucifixion of Christ in the apse.
