Herz Jesu Kirche (Sacred Heart of Jesus Church), Graz

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Herz-Jesu-Kirche) is a significant symbol of faith in Graz. Notably, it holds the title of being the largest church in the city. This architectural masterpiece was meticulously designed by Georg Hauberrisser, a renowned architect, who oversaw every detail of its creation from 1881 to 1887. The church is a prime example of Neogothic architecture, a style characterized by its intricate designs and spiritual aura, which was a popular architectural movement during the late 19th century.

One of the church’s most striking features is its high nave and under-church, both designed to emphasize the vertical lines and height typical of Neogothic architecture. Dominating the Graz skyline, the church’s tower soars to an impressive height of 109.6 meters, making it the third-highest church tower in Austria. This not only adds to the city's architectural diversity but also symbolizes a reaching out towards the heavens.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is also celebrated for its stained glass windows, which are among the few remaining examples of Neogothic stained glass in Austria. These windows not only illuminate the interior with vibrant colors but also tell religious stories and provide a contemplative space for visitors and worshippers alike.

In 1988, the altar area underwent a significant remodel by Gustav Troger, marking the church's centenary. This remodel, while modern, respected the original design ethos and concept laid out by Hauberrisser, ensuring that the church retained its historical and architectural integrity. Except for this modern intervention, the church remains a testament to Hauberrisser's vision, preserving the essence of its Neogothic design and continuing to serve as a place of worship and a landmark in Graz.
